Intergenerational Activity
Spending time together across generations can be deeply enriching for both young and old. When children and older adults connect, something very special happens.
Children bring a warm and infectious energy that can lift spirits and bring great joy to residents. Research has shown that interactions between young people and seniors can help to boost confidence, increase communication and improve memory.
For younger generations, these connections are equally valuable. Residents share life experiences, memorable stories and personal wisdom, offering insights into the past and helping young people better understand the important role older generations play in society. These conversations and shared moments encourage curiosity, broaden horizons and inspire younger people to dream about their own futures.
Our School Connections

At Rathkeevan Nursing Home we are fortunate to have a national school located close by. Over the years we have developed a warm and meaningful relationship with the children and their dedicated teachers.
Each year the children visit the home at Halloween, arriving in colourful fancy dress, and again at Christmas, when they perform for residents and enjoy a festive celebration together afterwards.
Their visits bring wonderful energy, laughter and fun to the home and are always eagerly anticipated by residents.
A Special Christmas Connection

We have also developed a special Christmas project with a local secondary school and three schools in France, where students send Christmas cards, letters, artwork and small gifts to our residents.
In addition, a national school in County Limerick sends cards and artwork each year. These thoughtful exchanges create meaningful connections between generations and across countries. Residents and students alike gain a great deal from the experience, and the time and care the young people put into these projects is deeply appreciated by the entire Rathkeevan community.
These intergenerational connections form an important part of the Joy of Living Activities Programme, creating opportunities for shared laughter, learning and friendship that enrich life for everyone involved.
